The South African National Gallery is our country’s premier public art museum, exhibiting historical, modern, and contemporary artworks by local and international artists. Art styles exhibited include paintings, works on paper, photography, sculpture, beadwork, textiles, and architecture.
Some of the renowned South African artists exhibited in the Gallery include Cecil Skotnes, Jane Alexander, William Kentridge, Anton van Wouw, Marlene Dumas, Maggie Laubscher, Gerard Sekoto, Penny Siopis, Irma Stern, and Mary Sibande. It also houses Dutch, French and British works dating back to the 17th – 19th centuries. Contemporary artworks are largely by local artists.
The National Gallery building dates back to 1930, built in the Company’s Garden. Prior to the building having been erected, the first ever fine art exhibition held in Cape Town was in the Company’s Garden in 1851.
The South African National Gallery has just undergone an extensive renovation. It is located 750 meters from Labotessa. Our hosts will gladly provide directions to our guests.
