Sun or Rain, locals swim in Cape Town Tidal Pools

Cape Town has more than ten Tidal Pools on its vast coastline. Locals are dedicated early morning or late afternoon swimmers, no matter how cold it is. Fresh seawater is added into the pools at high tide, crashing over the pool walls. It is advisable to swim at low tide. It is safer to swim in a Tidal Pool than in the ocean, especially for children. No chemicals are added to the tidal pools managed by the City of Cape Town.

One is lucky to swim with fish and other marine life in Cape Town’s lovely Tidal Pools:

*. Camps Bay Tidal Pool : one of the city’s larger pools, allowing one to swim laps. Two little sand beaches. Coffee shops close by, to warm one up after the swim. (Photograph)

*. Maiden’s Cove Tidal Pools: Also in Camps Bay, these two pools are not as popular as the Camps Bay Tidal Pool. It has a braai and picnic area. There are no coffee shops nearby.

*. Saunders’ Rock Tidal Pool: In Sea Point, on the Bantry Bay side. A small pool and a sand beach.

*. St James Tidal Pool: One of the city’s most popular and best-known tidal pools, with multi-coloured changing cubicles. Wind-sheltered in summer.

*. Woolley’s Tidal Pool, Kalk Bay. A smaller pool. Less crowded.

*. Dalebrook Tidal Pool, Kalk Bay. One of the most beautiful tidal pools, it is best to swim in it in the morning, as it loses sun in the afternoon. One may be lucky to see whales.

*. Glencairn Tidal Pool: Just before Simonstown. A larger pool. Dog-friendly area.

*. Miller’s Point Tidal Pool, Simonstown. Named after the man who set up a whaling station here almost 200 years ago. Whale watching an added bonus of swimming here.

*. Buffels Bay Tidal Pool, Cape Point Nature Reserve: Not very busy, with two tidal pools. Perfect for picnics and braais. Bordjiesdrif and Venus Pool Tidal Pools nearby too.

*. Soetwater Tidal Pool, Kommetjie: Also known as Infinity Pool. Kelp bed close by. Birdwatching a bonus here.
