Cape Town celebrated Earth Day and World Book Day this past weekend, and celebrates Freedom Day this coming Thursday.
Earth Day is celebrated around the world on 22 April, its theme this year being ‘Invest in our Future’. It has been celebrated for more than 50 years. The special day allows locals to show their support in protecting the environment and the planet. A march was held on the Sea Point Promenade on Saturday. A beach clean was held in Muizenberg, and a new recyclable coffee cup made from coffee grounds was launched by Starbucks. Disney+ is streaming ‘Secrets of the Elephants’, documenting how elephants are adapting to climate change.
World Book Day was celebrated yesterday, to promote the enjoyment of reading books. The highly regarded Franschhoek Literary Festival embodies this in its weekend-long book and writing Festival from 19 May.
Freedom Day is a public holiday on Thursday 27 April, and celebrates South Africa’s first democratic elections held in 1994. A Freedom Day Trail Run will be held at Cheverells Farm Shed in Elgin. A Market will be held at the District Six Homecoming Centre on the day. Visit the Long March to Freedom Exhibition at Century City, to see 100 life-size sculptures of iconic local freedom fighters. Visit the Slave Lodge, the South African National Gallery, and Bo-Kaap Museum for free on Freedom Day, all in close proximity to our Labotessa Hotel.
