Tswalu Motse sits within South Africa’s largest private game reserve, a vast, red-earth wilderness at the foot of the Korannaberg mountains in the southern Kalahari. Frequently Asked Questions
For Labotessa in Cape Town, the summer months from November to March offer warm weather and long days, although this also coincides with peak tourist season. Autumn and spring are often considered the most enjoyable periods, with milder conditions and fewer crowds.
For Tswalu Motse Lodge in the Kalahari, the cooler months from April to October – spanning autumn, winter, and spring – are generally preferred. By contrast, summer temperatures between November and March can rise significantly, although game viewing remains rewarding as wildlife congregates around water sources.
For Londolozi Tree Camp in the Greater Kruger, game viewing is excellent throughout the year, with the dry winter months from May to September widely regarded as the optimal period, when thinner vegetation makes wildlife easier to spot, particularly around waterholes. For Benguerra Island in the Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique, the most favourable time to visit is during the dry season from April to November. The wet season, from December to March, can bring heavier rainfall and higher humidity, though the island retains its natural beauty year-round. Whale sharks are typically present between October and March, which may influence travel timing depending on individual interests.

When travelling in Mozambique, it is advisable to carry US dollars in small denominations (post-2010 issues), as these are widely used for day-to-day purchases. Credit cards are accepted in hotels and lodges; however, it is recommended to have USD available for tipping as well as for purchases in markets and local shops. As many vendors do not accept American Express, it is preferable to travel with a Visa or Mastercard. In South Africa, payments are typically made either in the local currency, the South African Rand, or by credit card.
This itinerary is easily customisable, and can be tailored to extend or reduce stays, or to substitute properties with suitable alternatives. The order of destinations may also be adjusted or reversed to suit individual preferences. The beach component in Mozambique can, for example, be replaced with destinations such as Seychelles or Mauritius. The only exception is Tswalu, which is more challenging to replace given the absence of comparable alternatives in the region.
Safari stays are generally booked further in advance than typical city or beach holidays. We therefore recommend securing arrangements at least six to eight months ahead of travel. In addition, many of the properties we recommend are small, exclusive, and offer limited availability.
Payment is required in advance, and may be made by credit card or bank transfer. A deposit is required to secure all bookings, with the remaining balance payable no later than 60 days prior to travel.
Transport arrangements can be tailored to your preferences, ranging from private chauffeur-driven transfers for a seamless travel experience, to self-drive rental cars for greater flexibility and independence. Within the cities, Uber is widely available, reliable, and cost-effective. Most private safari lodges are accessed either by road transfer or by light aircraft to a nearby bush airstrip, with the latter often proving both the most efficient option and a memorable highlight of the journey.
