Celebrating South African wines’ early roots

On 2 February 1659 the South African wine industry was born, with the first wine produced in the Cape by the Dutch settlers. Last week the 364th South African wine grape harvest was celebrated by the wine industry.

First Governor of the Cape, Jan van Riebeeck, noted in his diary, “Today, praise be to God, wine was made for the first time from Cape grapes”. 

Congratulations to all our hard working winemakers and their teams who have put South African wines on the world map, as well as to sommeliers and waiters pouring our fabulous Cape wines.
