They say that a walk in nature is one of the healthiest forms of exercise you can do. A slow amble in the woods or a stroll along the beach not only connects you to your breath and lowers your stress levels, but it enhances a positive mindset, especially. The beautiful kaleidoscope of colours, the fragrance of the flowers, the sounds of the leaves in the breeze. The birds, the waves, the waterfalls and the trickling rivers all contribute to the harmony of your heartbeat.
The Cape is revered for its abounding nature. The trails that take you around the mountain, through the valleys and over the ridges are deemed some of the most scenically spectacular in the world. Many of them are on our doorsteps, wrapping themselves around the city.
Whichever routes we choose to traverse, however physically adventurous one might be, or whatever the direction of the wind, there are enough nature trails to explore around Cape Town, that will be sure to take your breath away. An inimitable vantage point of surveying the urban landscape folded around the ankles of the mountain. Where trickling streams flow alongside the footpaths, forming waterfalls as they water the verdant fynbos. Where the birdlife sings its Cape chorus in sync with the hum of the mountain breeze. A symphony of inspiration that reminds us just how wonderful it is to be out into nature. Making the most of this magnificent city, and earning the appetite for the next feasting that will surely ensue. Exactly as a healthy holiday should be.
We’ve put together a list of some wonderful nature trails to explore around Cape Town, just a brief drive away from the luxury of Labotessa’s front doors…
- Lion’s Head Hiking Trails – A loop around the base requires less exertion than a hike all the way to the top, which should be walked with caution as there are a number of steep areas that demand some climbing. The views from the top are absolutely spectacular as you get to enjoy a 360-degree view of the city, and the mountain in all of her glory. Allow for 90 minutes.
- Platteklip Gorge, India Venster and Kasteelspoort Trails – All demand a lot of energy but are worth the effort! As you traverse the tracks to the top of Table Mountain, you get to witness some of the best views, and the flora and fauna that accompanies you on your journey. Allow for 2-5 hours.
- Silvermine Nature Reserve – Pack a picnic and your swimming gear, and head to the beautiful paths and pools of Silvermine. Spend hours exploring the wanders of Table Mountain National Park from the central section. Allow for a morning or an afternoon.
- Cecilia Waterfall – A relatively challenging hike through Cecilia Forest up the back of Table Mountain. Swim in the fresh water that’s trickling down from the mountain and enjoy the spectacular views along the way. Will definitely get the hearts racing, and you’ll see some beautiful plants, birdlife, as well as small wildlife. Allow for 2-3 hours.
- Tokai Forest Walk – Whatever level of hiking you’re inclined to do, there are a number of scenic routes to explore the whole forest area by foot (or by bike, if you would like to hire one for the day). There is also a lovely secret café spot tucked away in the trees. Only a 30-minute drive from Labotessa. Allow for 2-3 hours.
- Elephant’s Eye Hiking Trail – A moderate hike, without a huge amount of shade on the way to the cave, but a beautiful way to explore the mountain. There are a number of incredible routes that you can navigate from this pathway, including Chapman’s Peak Drive, The Sentinel, Noordhoek Peak and Constantiaberg. A 45-minute drive from Labotessa. Allow for 2-5 hours.
Remember to pack plenty of water, some snacks to support the stamina, a sunhat and suncream, as well as a rain jacket. Just in case…you’re in the Cape so you never know if the rain will decide to join you.
